According to official statistics, a rather frightening fact exists: On average, every fifth road accident in the world is caused by drivers experiencing drowsiness or falling asleep at the wheel. In an effort to to prevent this often fatal sort of occurence, many different devices have been invented over the years. Most recently, specialists at American automobile giant, Ford together, with engineers from GTB have presented, perhaps, the most high-tech device yet seen – a baseball cap that will not allow a driver to fall asleep at the wheel.
Primarily, this headgear is intended for use by long distance truck drivers, as well as taxi drivers. Equally, there is much benefit in use by non-commercial drivers too, and the regular public are not exempt from the risk of themselves nodding-off while driving.
The cap is equipped with gyroscopes and a number of digital instruments that register the position and movement of a driver’s head. In addition, there is also a special application on the smartphone for synchronization and device management.
This high-tech cap analyzes the readings of all of its onboard instruments and, if a sudden change in the position of the head or its tilting is recorded, the cap begins to vibrate vigorously, as well blink LEDs into a driver’s eyes from their location on the cap’s brim. In addition to this, the Ford baseball cap will produce another alert to drowsy drivers with an array of sirens.
It is hoped and intended that this unique product and its system will shock a driver into lucidity sufficiently enough to provide a burst of energy that will facilitate their finding a safe place to stop to recuperate, before commencing their onward journey.
At present, developers have not indicated an exact retail cost for this interesting baseball, or indeed, a list of countries in which it may be sold, but Ford representatives have promised to chair a launch and demonstration event in Brazil.
