Already the first test launches showed that it will be able to launch a cargo weighing 36 tons (weight F-35 – 27 tons) at a speed of 390 km / h. Instead of an airplane, a trolley with a load was attached to the sledges of the catapult. It provided a smoother acceleration and less load on it. This result was made possible, thanks to the linear actuator of the trigger mechanism, which replaced the previous steam piston drive.
Electromagnetic catapult consists of long stationary beams (stators) and a carriage located between the beams and moving in both directions. Each beam consists of separate segments, to which power cables are connected to create a powerful electromagnetic field, which drives the carriage. The principle of the catapults is similar to the device of an electromagnetic or gauss gun .
According to reports, the catapult will be able to send airplanes from the deck every 45 seconds. Just worth mentioning – the novelty is very “gluttonous.” For three launches, it consumes 100 million watts, which is commensurate with the needs of a small city for the same time.
However, the smaller weight of the new system, due to its compactness, with great possibilities, leaves no doubt that prospective aircraft carriers will be equipped with electromagnetic catapults.
