LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors provide unmanned vehicles with three-dimensional vision capabilities, bringing them ever-closer to being able to navigate the roads of this world independently.
One of the leaders in the production of LIDAR solutions is Velodyne, who have held their prominence for over ten years, their developments and new devices continuing to out-perform the old in many ways, as well as those of their competitors.
The company’s most recent creation is a 128-channel LIDAR sensor that possesses the highest resolution and largest range of operation ever before seen.
Thanks to the presence of 128 lasers installed inside the body of the sensor, cars with autopilot functionality will be able to see at much higher resolution and clarity. In addition to this, such a device will scan terrain at rates three to ten times faster than any prevous LIDAR device. As cars are developed with smarter and ‘wiser’ autopilot judgement systems, the need to also equip them with stronger vision and perception behaviours increases accordingly. LIDARs will work at the strongest with the aid and partnership of cameras, radar and GPS technology.
Components for this new line in LIDAR sensors will begin to be produced in early 2018. By the middle of the same year, full-scale production will be underway, with the third tertial of 2018 when end-customers will begin to be able to source these marvellous devices.
